| Customer Reviews: Love this bike! June 6, 2009 Anna E Giles 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I got this bike 2 weeks ago and absolutely love it. I've had the same women's bike for 18 years and like to ride for leisure. I thought my old bike was fine, but forced myself to buy a new bike anyway to treat myself and to ride more often with my 3-year old. Boy, am I glad I did! I got it on sale at Target for $139, so that was icing on the cake. There's a huge difference between a mountain bike and a regular bike. you can easily go over all terrain, jump sidewalks easily, etc. Like everyone says, the gears switch very easily and the bike is rugged. And it looks sporty too, not like a girly-girl bike. I look forward to my son getting older and really being able to ride a mountain bike too. This bike is sure to serve me well for many years.
Excellent Budget Bike May 24, 2009 NYC_Babe (Brooklyn, NY USA) 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
Long story short: last year, I wanted to finally take the plunge and start bike commuting for the first time ever. Problem was I needed a relatively inexpensive bike to get started. Why? Because being a newbie I had no idea whether I'd really get into it, so it didn't make much sense to go spring for a really expensive "pro" bike in the 300+ range if there was a chance that it might wind up collecting dust in the basement.
So I started looking at what the bike community derisively refers to as the "X Mart" bike (inexpensive bikes sold for under 200 bucks at big box stores). Keep in mind that I had heard nothing but horror stories about them. Supposedly, they were incredibly heavy, horribly slapped together, and ticking time bombs ready to happen. Besides, they were nothing but "toys", anyway, and not real bikes. But I remained undeterred in my mission to find a low budget bike. I figured, "Hey, if worse comes to worse, at least I'll get a few good months out of it and by then will figure out how much I'll be into bike commuting. If I am, I'll get a better bike. If I'm not, it's no big loss, as I only paid $149 for it."
Good thing I stuck to my guns, because if I hadn't, I would've never discovered this little gem. The Schwinn Ranger, I think, is probably one of the few "X mart" bikes that is worth buying. For one, it's surprisingly lightweight for a bike of its class (about 41 pounds), which was important for a New Yorker like me who occasionally has the need to bring the bike onto the subway. So far, I've had virtually no problems lifting this bike and hauling it up and down several flights of stairs, and I have the upper body strength of a newborn kitten.
Two, although it's not made of the top of the line parts, the Schwinn Ranger is definitely a lot sturdier than you would expect. I've ridden this bike for several months over rocky, pothole-ridden streets and cobbled sidewalks and the only problem I ever really had were loosened bolts in the handlebar from lack of maintenance. Aside from that, the bike has withstood the rigors of rough NYC streets and a minimal tune ups fine. I've even crashed this bike twice (don't ask) and there have been no broken parts so far, gearing is working as it should, braking is fine. Everything is up to speed. I think that going six months into this bike, it's safe to say that if you perform routine tune ups on it like clockwork, you'll definitely get the biggest bang for your buck mileage-wise. So no, in contrast to the naysayers, this X Mart bike won't be falling apart in three months in spite of your best efforts.
As for the assembly? I can't say how hard or easy it was to assemble, since I got mine at the store. As for how it was put together, the bikes at the Target where I bought my bike are pretty well assembled. However, results may vary depending on your local Target, so definitely do a thorough checkup before wheeling one out of the store, especially with steering and gearing.
One last thing I can say about this bike? It's very stylish and comes with cool extras like an underseat bike bag, bottle cage, and water bottle. I thought the bike bag was perfect (great for an all-in-one tool and first aid kit); however, I am going to replace the cage or perhaps adjust it manually so it holds the bottle better. (The cage that came with my bike had a weak grip, so I wound up losing the bottle that came with it.)
So in a nutshell, I'm really happy with the purchase of this bike and highly recommend it if you're either a newcomer to cycling or someone who hasn't biked in awhile and is looking for a way to get her feet wet without breaking the bank. I would normally give the Ladies Schwinn Ranger five stars, but I deducted one star as an alert for those looking for a "mountain bike." You see, even though the Schwinn Ranger is called a mountain bike, it's more a mountain "style" bike, not really meant for extreme stunts and offroad roading. (There's even a label on it that warns against using it this way). This won't be an issue for you if you don't intend to use it offroad, but it might if you're looking for a "true" mountain bike. Any other usage (commuting, recreational riding) and it'll just be fine for your needs.
P.S. I've uploaded a picture of my bike that I took as I crossed the Manhattan Bridge. As you can see, it's a darker blue than the product image. Isn't it the cat's meow? ;-)
Finally riding! May 11, 2009 Justeace (CT United States) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I haven't been riding in years, decades. I've been missing riding and I finally bought this new bike. I didn't want a girly bike I wanted something that could take some abuse. I had to replace the seat which was super easy, used an adjustable wrench. The one that comes with the bike is horrible, way to small and hard. I love the smooth changing gears and the upright feel. I bought this bike fully assembled from Target, sorry Amazon but there was no way I was putting an entire bike together. So far except for replacing the seat I really like this bike. For the record I bought a Schwinn wide comfort seat, it doesn't have gel in it but it feels good. The bike is lightweight so putting it into my trunk and taking it out easy.
Great Bike! May 5, 2009 G. High (Monroe, NC United States) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is a great bike. I just got it as a gift and I love it. It rides great especially off road. I ride with my kids through the yard and on gravel roads, across ditches and through holes and it rides great. It has a pouch on the back under seat which is wonderful, I put my cell phone and keys in it. The brakes are easy to reach for a woman's small hands. The gears are the smoothest I've ever used, it changes incredibly smoothly, you almost can't tell your changing gears. I would definitely buy this bike again in a minute.
