One of the best values June 17, 2010 A. Aguilar (NYC) I went to 2 bike shops and thier version of this bike were $278 and $289. I bought this at Toys R us in the Chrome version. The chome is killer and my son instantly loved it. I had to pay $174 plus $15 to get the built one and it was worth it. I just poped it into the van and drove home. My son jumped on it and loved it instantly. This bike looks like a pro bike. It has front and rear pegs, mags to help prevent bending of the rims when doing tricks and a free spining handle bar. It only has hand braks not foot brakes.
The only this is, my son is 4'3" and "just" makes the size cut. Any shorter and the bike would be too big. (he just turned 8). Ont thing, he went up to this size from a 16" or aprox bike and he had to get used to getting on and off of it. The pedals are metal and they have sharp serrated edges, don't know what they were thinking. In addition, the pedals have spikes to help with grip. Of course my son was wearing shorts, and within a few hours he got a gash from the petal and we ended up in the ER for 3 stiches.
I imediatly got him plastic pedals for $15 at a bike shop, and now he has to wear pants when riding..... lessons learned.
Mongoose Raid February 8, 2010 Thomas J. Tuttle This bike was very easy to assemble. I had an issue with the back rim; but, with the excellent costomer support I had a new rim in just two days.
Nice bike and no trouble to assemble at all! December 17, 2009 Yohann Tsiro This "freestyle" bike had all the features that my son wanted; "mag" wheels, front and rear axle pegs and it was a MONGOOSE! (a critically important aspect.)
I was very reluctant to buy the bike based on the other reviews here, but I did order it and had it delivered to my office. I was able to put this bike together in about 35 minutes while wearing a suit and tie. No problem at all.
This bike is not super lightwieght, but it's not really heavy either. A Diamondback "Viper" BMX bike is considerabley lighter, but this bike is OK. It also has the gadget that allows the rider to spin the handlebars and not tangle up the brake cables.
All in all I am very happy I decided to buy this Mongoose and get my son exactly what he wanted his Christmas. After all, how often does that happen?
Very poor craftsmenship June 9, 2009 Jane Smith (Oregon) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had to send this bike back because the holes for the pedals to attach to the bike were not drilled large enough for them to fit through! I did not bother to replace it after that. Schwinn was good about the return though, good customer service.
Cool bike but horrible to assemble March 19, 2009 Shannon Grace (Edwards, CA) This bike is very cool, my son loves it, but 5 hours into the assembly I finally realized I needed to take it to a professional to finish putting together. I can follow instructions but the manual is apparently for all bikes mongoose sold over a 5 year period. Very difficult to put together!
